Now on its 4th run, the Globe Media Excellence Award is back! ChadaCDO had the privilege of attending the recent press briefing by Globe Telecom Inc., in officially launching GMEA 2019 where the mechanics were discussed after a brief Telco 101 session with Globe Telecom’s Director of External Affairs for Vismin – Patrick Gloria.

Globe launched GMEA in 2012 to recognize journalists, broadcasters, bloggers, and social media advocates in Cebu and Davao who have shown excellence in their craft, commitment to their profession, and have created positive impact to the society.

On its fourth run in 2015, GMEA expanded its coverage to other key cities in Visayas and Mindanao. GMEA now covers Cebu, Bacolod, and Iloilo in Visayas, and Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, and General Santos in Mindanao.

Anchored on Globe Telecom’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, GMEA seeks out entries that delve on the care for the environment, innate care for people, positive societal impact, and digitalization.

Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA) – Mechanics, Requirements, and Formats

GMEA 2019 has 2 print categories, 2 broadcast categories, 5 digital categories, and 3 special awards!


Print
1. News Report of the Year for Print – This award honors the best news story in print demonstrating the highest standards of responsible journalism through effective data gathering and coherent storytelling. The story must be a relevant topic to the community, anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. It must reflect purposeful reporting, encouraging discourse or action in the community.


2. Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Print – This award honors excellence in explanatory/investigative reporting in print, highlighting a significant issue anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. The story should demonstrate resourceful and purposeful reporting in uncovering relevant issues, exposing even uncomfortable truths for the benefit of the common good. May be in the form of a series pertaining to developing story.

Broadcast

  1. News Report of the Year for Radio – This award honors the best news story on radio demonstrating the highest standards of responsible journalism through effective data gathering and coherent storytelling. The radio report or commentary must be a relevant topic to the community, anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. It must reflect purposeful reporting, encouraging discourse or action in the community.
  2. Explanatory/Inveestigative Story/Documentary of the Year for Television – This award honors excellence in explanatory/investigative reporting in Television, highlighting a significant issue anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. The TV feature should demonstrate resourceful and purposeful reporting in uncovering relevant issues, and exposing even uncomfortable truths for the benefit of common good. May be in the form of a series pertaining to a developing story.

Digital

  1. Explanatory/Investigative Story of the Year for Digital – This award honors excellence in explanatory/investigative reporting published in an online site, highlighting a significant issue anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. The story should demonstrate resourceful and purposeful reporting in uncovering relevant issues, exposing even uncomfortable truths for the benefit of common good.
  2. Explanatory/Investigative Video Story of the Year for Digital – This award honors excellence in explanatory/investigative reporting in video format that best enlightens issues of public importance, anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. The video should demonstrate resourceful and purposeful reporting in uncovering relevant issues, exposing even uncomfortable truths for the benefit of common good.

    Published in an online site, this video entry should have a duration of 1 minute to 5 minutes and showcase excellence in visual storytelling, breaking down complex issues in a manner easily understood by the audience.
  3. Photo of the Year for Digital – This award honors excellence in photojournalism, recognizing the image that best encapsulates and represents a relevant issue, event, or situation, and demonstrates an outstanding level of visual perception and creativity. The photo must be anchored and related to any of the identified sustainability focus areas.
  4. Social Media Advocacy of the Year – This award recognizes an online movement or campaign with the objective of improving the state of our society and country, anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas. It should promote a call-to-action and drive positive engagement in the online community.
  5. Breaking News of the Year – This award honors excellence in agile reportage covering a developing news story with creative use of various digital platforms for a quick turnaround. The story should demonstrate clear, accurate, and timely journalism with materials produced within 4-6 hours from the occurrence of the event. Story should be anchored on any of the identified sustainability focus areas.

Special Awards

  1. Environment Story of the Year – This award recognizes outstanding journalism in the reporting of any environmental issue(s) in the Philippines. The piece must highlight an insightful argument on an environmental issue as well as generate and inspire action and/or discussion among the story’s audience. May be in form of any media: Print, TV, Radio, Digital.
  2. Newsmaker of the Year – This special award honors a journalist and his/her impactful body of work throughout the year. The person is to be nominated by his colleagues – fellow writers, editors and broadcasters alike based on his/her contribution and influence in the community and the industry.
  3. Editor of the Year – This special award honors the editor and his contributions to the industry throughout his/her service. The person is to be nominated by his colleagues – fellow writers, editors and broadcasters alike based on positive influence in the community and the industry.

Important Reminders:
– Entries must delve on the four (4) Sustainability Focus Areas: care for the environment, innate care for people, positive societal impact, and digital nation.
– Entries must be aired/published/posted within the search period. ( Search period for Mindanao: June 2018 to July 2019 )
– Translations of entries in local dialects are not required.
– Attachments for social impact are optional. However, a major consideration shall be given to those who can present documented proofs. This may include screenshots of social media discussions and shares; references to subsequent reports and commentaries (print, radio, and blogs) arising from the entry; actions by government officials, civil society, and/or ordinary citizens; among other proofs of social impact.
– Entrants are not allowed to submit the same entry to different categories.

Qualifications and Requirements

Entrants must be working with print, broadcast or online news outlets, or must have active blogs or social media accounts during the publication of their work.

Visayas
Search period: May 2018 to June 2019
Submission period: June 10 to July 5, 2019

Mindanao
Search period: June 2018 to July 2019
Submission period: July 1 to 26, 2019

Contenders must fill out all the required items in the entry form. The following items must be submitted:
-> accomplished entry form
-> category entry requirements
-> scanned copy of ID
-> high resolution photo of entrant
